5 small details that turn 4-star guests into 5-star reviews

The turnover touches guests actually notice — and the ones they never mention but always feel.

Guests rarely leave four stars because something was dirty. They leave four stars because nothing was memorable. After more than a decade of turnovers — first in Colorado, now across Big Island — these are the five details that move the needle.

1. The bed has to look hotel-made, not home-made

A duvet that hangs evenly on both sides and pillows with sharp corners read as “professional” before a guest touches anything. It costs about ninety extra seconds per bed. It is the single highest-leverage minute in the whole turnover.

2. Kill the smell before you chase the dust

On the Hilo side especially, a closed-up house smells like damp within two days. Open everything while you clean, run the fan, and check soft goods — curtains, couch cushions, the bath mat — with your nose, not your eyes. Guests describe this as “fresh” in reviews and never mention cleaning.

3. Restock past the halfway mark

A half-empty toilet paper roll is technically stocked. It still reads as neglect. Anything a guest can run out of mid-stay should start full, with a visible spare. That is most of what our monthly supply delivery exists to solve.

4. Wipe what people touch, not just what people see

Light switches, remote controls, the fridge handle, the lanai door latch, the coffee maker lid. These are the surfaces guests physically contact in the first ten minutes, and they are the ones most often skipped.

5. Leave one thing that was not required

Local coffee. A note with the wifi password written by hand. Fresh flowers from the yard. It does not need to cost anything — it needs to signal that a person was here and cared. This is the detail that shows up verbatim in five-star reviews.

Every clean we run ends with a photo report, so you can confirm all five landed without driving out to the property.
